Hamstel Infant School & Nursery Weekly News 17th october 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Wow…what a busy week full of fun and excitement!

On Monday, we had the Night Owls come to visit to give a presentation to Year 2 about their fabulous birds. The children were so excited as they told me about the tiny owl who was no bigger than somebody’s hand, the barn owl with velvety soft feathers and how the owls swopped silently over their heads as they flew from one side of the hall to the other. The children then had the opportunity to pose with the owls for some magic photo memories!

Tuesday and Wednesday evenings saw us host our teacher/parent meetings. Thank you to everybody who came along, we hope you enjoyed hearing how well the children have settled into school this term, and getting to meet our wonderful teachers. Thank you also to those of you who took the time to pass on such positive comments or complete our questionnaire sheet – your feedback is always so important to us and yet again your views will be used to help develop our plans for the future.

Talking of parental feedback, this week we also had a very productive meeting with our Parent Council where we had lots of good, constructive discussions around a range of different things including outdoor learning, the recent school photographs, our swimming pool and the school priorities for this year. Please see the minutes from this meeting for the majority of our responses to your questions but there are a couple of areas I would like to address across the whole school;

While some parents were very happy that there are now home packed lunches in place, some felt that there was added pressure to supply their child with a packed lunch, especially if their friends were also having it. I just wanted to reiterate that there is no pressure or expectation from us that parents supply home packed lunches. As we have previously stressed, every child in our school is entitled to a free school meal and this would always be our preference, as we want parents to take advantage of this government initiative while it lasts. However, if you want to supply a home packed lunch, this needs to be your own decision and for you to discuss this with your child.

The issue of parking around the school site has also been raised. While as a school, we obviously have limited powers to enforce how people park on public roads, all I can do is respectfully ask that you park considerately for both our neighbours, other parents and carers and other general road users. Please help us keep all our pupils safe by:

• Avoiding parking on yellow lines, pavements, or across driveways

• Using designated parking bays or spaces where possible

• Avoid parking dangerously on tight corners or bends

• Keeping clear of the school entrance and school car park to allow emergency access and limit risk of accidents

We appreciate how busy drop-off and pick-up times can be for families and that time is often tight, but a few extra moments to park safely makes a real difference. Thank you.

Today, we have also been holding our Colour Run across the whole school, with children giving their all as they ran round our school field five (yes, five) times to complete their 2km. There was a great buzz as parents cheered the children on and as they proudly wore their medals. We are really excited to see how much sponsorship has been collected but we are already over £3500 and will of course, share the final figure with you next week. A huge thankyou to everybody that donated and came to support the event and a special shout out to Mrs Tracy, who has worked so hard to put all of this together. All proceeds will be put to great use in our outdoor learning garden over the next term.

Next week, it’s a fairly quiet week in Hamstel terms, but we do have a handwriting workshop for Reception parents on Thursday 23rd. Kingfisher and Owl parents at 9am and Woodpecker and Peacock parents at 2:30pm. We hope to see you there.

I hope you all enjoy the weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday for unbelievably, the last week before half term.

It has been a busy week for Rainbow Room, the children have been learning more about family and about adults they can trust. The children have continued learning about feelings and emotions using the Zones of Regulation, we have been delving deeper into feelings and how things make us feel, and how we can support those feelings.

The children have made some lovely art work using different mark making techniques. In PE the children enjoyed following a structured rout, and following visuals with limited adult support, we all had lots of fun and were in need of a rest!

Starlight

We’ve had a very exciting start to the week! On Monday, we had a special visit from Nite Owls. The children gathered in the hall to meet some beautiful owls and learn lots of interesting facts about them. The children even had the chance to have their photo taken with an owl.

In PSHE, we’ve been learning about the difference between happy surprises and secrets that might make us feel uncomfortable. The children have been great at discussing how to tell the difference and what to do if they ever feel unsure.

In Art, we explored the work of Quentin Blake and had a go at drawing owls in his unique, sketchy style – the results were fantastic!

We also continued our learning about the Zones of Regulation, with a focus on the Green Zone – when we feel calm, happy, and ready to learn.

REMINDER: Outdoor learning on Monday. Please dress your child in appropriate clothing and provide a change of clothes. Thank you.

This week we have been reading the traditional tale ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We have continued to develop our knowledge of adjectives and noun phrases and have written some descriptive sentences about the Fox and the Gingerbread Man.

In maths we have been learning to add numbers within 10 using our knowledge of number bonds. We have been working practically using part-part whole diagrams to complete number sentences.

In design and technology, we have been discussing different fruits and vegetables. We had a tasting session where we described the taste of strawberries, raspberries, peppers and pineapple. We used a knife to practise our safe cutting skills of a banana and cucumber. In PE we have been continuing making wide, narrow and curled poses in gymnastics.

REMINDER: Outdoor learning next week

Year 2

It’s been a great week in Year 2. The children loved having our Owl visitors swoop in for a fantastic display. The children observed a range of owls fly around the hall whilst finding out lots of interesting facts about the Owls.

Back in the classroom we used the facts we learnt from the display and researched some more. We then used the facts to write some factual sentences about Owls. We have learnt where Owls live in their natural habitats, what they like to eat and about baby owls.

In Maths we have begun our unit on addition and started learning about adding a 2-digit number with another 2-digit number but without renaming e.g. 42+20=. We have had to apply understanding of counting in tens to help us. We have explored this concept using our tens and one's equipment so we can see visually how this looks in. We then moved on to using a pictorial method, where we have drawn out the tens and ones to help us and we have begun to use the column method.

This week we have also begun our Artist Study on Quentin Blake and using his ‘Three Little Owls’ as inspiration for our own artwork. We have explored his drawings, thinking about we liked and disliked. We have also been learning how to use line to draw an owl in the style of Quentin Blake.
