Principal's Message

Only two weeks to go before Autumn school break

With just two weeks left before we break for the Autumn holiday, we still have so much to fit in. Last week, Year 7 and 9 students completed their NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN is a valuable check point for schools to gauge where students require extra assistance in their literacy and numeracy. Other year groups will be involved in Literacy and Numeracy Check-in Assessments in Semester 2 and VALID for Science in Term 3 and 4. Our small group tutoring program continues to support students requiring extra support or extension work.

South Passage returns

Our Year 9 sailors from the South Passage have made their way safely home. A very big thank you to Mr Mat Hall, Ms Emily Fowler, Mr Aaron Madritsch for giving up their family time for the week to ensure our Year 9 students had the opportunity to develop deep connection, build their resilience and skills. Thank you also to Mr Bradley Connor our driver to and from the dock. I expect there was much sleep caught up on over the weekend for staff and students both.

South Passage Adventure
Students voice

This week has a big focus on student voice, agency and leadership. Today, we induct our new Student Representative Council (SRC) members. These courageous young leaders have put up their hand to be the voice of their peers and lead school activities and fundraising for many great causes. Our SRC uses some of the funds raised to support students who are excelling at sport or cultural activities to attend state level representative opportunities. Students are supporting excellence and equity.

On Wednesday, a much larger group of students will have the opportunity to have their voices heard and their ideas actioned through a community conversation process. In collaboration with The Office of Youth, The Mullumbimby Neighbourhood Centre, Byron Youth Activity Centre, we are running a Connect and Thrive event. For this event, some of our students have been trained as facilitators to lead table conversations. It is a very exciting opportunity to really know what it is our students value and would like to see change in our school and community.

RIOT (Resilience in our Teens) and Starting Strong Interviews

This week also, our Year 7 students will have their RIOT (Resilience in our Teens) day giving them the opportunity to make connections with their peers, engage with the RIOT program and develop their social and emotional resilience. Year 7 will also be preparing for their Starting Strong Interviews.

Uniform at school and footwear

Just a reminder with the colder weather on the way for Term 2, to get your MHS blue hoodie or jumper from the uniform shop. Mullumbimby High is a proud, public school where we value the wearing of uniform as it supports a sense of belonging to something important and promotes excellence and equity in our school.

This is a friendly reminder to families that students are required to wear appropriate, enclosed footwear at school. Footwear such as Slides, Ugg boots, Crocs, and Birkenstocks does not meet the school’s safety requirements and should not be worn to school. These types of shoes present a safety hazard, particularly during practical lessons and when moving around the school grounds. For this reason, students must wear fully enclosed shoes that provide adequate protection and support. If a student arrives at school wearing inappropriate footwear, they may be excluded from certain classes where there is a safety risk. In these situations, the school will contact parents or carers and request that a suitable pair of enclosed shoes be brought to school for the student to change into. We appreciate your support in ensuring that students come to school dressed safely and appropriately each day. Have a nourishing week nine everyone!

Word of the week in honour of the Autumnal equinox

Reminder of school procedures: Leaving Early, Arriving Late or Messages

GOING AWAY 5 DAYS OR MORE? A reminder to our school community that the NSW DET requires that parents arrange holiday DURING school vacations. If your family holiday is during school time, you will need to inform the School Principal in advance and submit a permission to leave from school. An application for leave should be provided at least two weeks prior to departure. Ask our office for an “Application for Leave” BEFORE the holiday. ABSENT, LATE OR EARLY?  If your child is not at school, let us know they are safe. We will let you know they are not at school with an SMS message if we have not heard from you. COMING IN LATE?  School starts every day at 8:50am for all students. If students arrive after that time and miss CARE (roll call), please let the school know why they are late or provide them with a note. Students need to sign in at Student Services Office as soon as they arrive on the premises. LEAVING EARLY? Only legitimate one-off appointments will be approved by the principal. A note or a phone call should be made to Student Services before 9:30am and a leave pass will be processed. MESSAGES TO STUDENTS? Please call before 2pm. Only URGENT messages will be passed on during class time. We ask that all arrangements regarding after school activities be discussed with your student BEFORE school to avoid stress and distraction.

Attendance Matters

Coming to school regularly makes a big difference - it helps you keep up with your learning, stay connected, and give yourself the best chance to succeed. We're excited to announce that this year, we're recognising students who show a strong commitment to being at school. At the end of each term, all students with 95% attendance or higher will go into the draw to win a $500 gift voucher. Two vouchers will be awarded every term so there's plenty of chances to win. Vouchers can be used at a range of stores, including JB Hi-FiFoot LockerCity Beach, EB Games and plenty of other leading retailers. So come to school each day, stay consistent, and you could be in the draw to win $500!
