Belonging In Action
In March, Dr. Lisa Giudici led a thought provoking training on sense of belonging for AEC student employees, drawing from her doctoral research on the topic. She engaged the 175 AEC student staff members in an interactive and reflective experience that invited them to explore their own sense of belonging at URI—and the important role they play in creating belonging for others as student employees. Through reflective activities and open conversation, the sessions created a welcoming space that felt both purposeful and personal. Student feedback highlighted the powerful impact of the training. One participant shared, "A wonderful energy and atmosphere with this [professional] development!” Another noted the connection to the work environment saying, " I think the AEC does a great job at sense of belonging!!" Many appreciated how the experience felt less like a presentation and more like meaningful dialogue: “I felt the presentation/workshop was a lot of fun and even though I definitely learned a lot about myself and my peers, I like how it felt like having casual conversations with new people within the AEC.” The AEC team extends a heartfelt thank you to Lisa for sharing her expertise and creating such an affirming experience for our student employees.
Making connections and elevating the AEC at NEPTA!
On Saturday March 28th 2026, representatives from The AEC attended the New England Peer Tutoring Association (NEPTA) Conference at Providence College. Three staff members (Heather Price, Ceileidh Kung, and Josie Chaves) and six student staff members participated, engaging with colleagues and peers from institutions across New England. AEC student employees gained valuable insight into multimodal learning, tutoring in the digital age, artificial intelligence, working with multilingual writers, strategies for supporting students in getting unstuck and maintaining confidence in their coursework, and connecting transferable skills from tutoring to the workplace. Staff members explored topics such as embedded tutoring, Reading Apprenticeship, and approaches to strengthening tutor engagement through clear procedures and policies. Overall, the conference provided a meaningful opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect while bringing back ideas to further enhance the impact of AEC services.

The AEC staff extends a huge congratulations to the graduating class of 2026. These student employees are the heart of what we do and they have touched so many lives in the time that they have been with us. As they embark on new careers, internships, graduate degree programs, and experiences abroad, we celebrate them and all their accomplishments. Thank you for all you have given to this URI community, seniors!
