Students Learn Practical Safety Skills for Everyday Life
Tenth and eleventh grade students participated in a burn injury prevention and safety presentation led by Kelly Reed, Burn Injury Prevention and Education Outreach Coordinator with the Clark Burn Center at Upstate University Hospital. The presentation covered a variety of topics designed to help students stay safe at home, outdoors, and as they prepare for greater independence in the future. Students learned about cooking and microwave safety, gas-powered equipment, ATV and side-by-side safety, the dangers of accelerants, lithium-ion battery safety, smoke detectors, and the importance of having an emergency escape plan.
OV staff member Mr. McCann also spoke with students about the proper use of fire extinguishers, shared information about becoming a firefighter, and discussed lessons learned from his own experiences in the field. Programs like this help students develop practical knowledge and safety awareness that can be applied in everyday situations.
Thank you to Kelly Reed, the Clark Burn Center, and Mr. McCann for sharing their expertise and helping students learn how to prevent injuries and respond safely in emergency situations.
