Understanding Seasons
One of the most important wisdom and understanding that we must develop is the ability to be aware of and act accordingly, at the different seasons of our individual lives and the Church as a whole. To act appropriately to a given season will position us to the next season that God has in mind for us. It’s so important for the fulfillment of God’s plan for His people that He designated, and anointed an entire tribe, to discern the season His people are in. That specific tribe was the tribe of Issachar. “of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command.” 1 Chron. 12:32. This anointing is very important if you want to achieve what God has entrusted to, and if it is sustainable for you to experience growth in life.
- Animals recognize seasons. Jer. 8:7
- Kings and kingdom have their seasons. Dan 2:20-21
- Season is a gift from God. Acts 14:17
Not all seasons are the same although it is the God-ordained seasons of life. Eccl. 3:1-11. Seasons require understanding. Gal 6:9 “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
There are basically 4 seasons in personal development and growing a Church or ministry:
1. Autumn – the season of initiation The soil in autumn is still soft and moist. This season brings and initiates fresh ideas and new focus. During this season, growth happens mainly “downwards”. It’s time for vision and mission journey Hab. 2:3
2. Winter – the season of establishment Nothing much happens outside or externally. It’s the season where our hidden roots or foundations are strengthened. We must never succumb to peer pressure and expectation of others but allow God to establish what we do before doing other things.
3. Spring – the season of stretching There is much happening and everything seems out of control. The pressure becomes unbearable and unsurmountable. You will need to face the challenges and raise the expectation. “Growth is a result of process change”- some will fail and die here in this season because they are not able to face the challenges and as a result, they will resist or be disappointed. Peter was used by devil in Matt 16. No stretching, no growth.
4. Summer - the season of celebration Time of rejoicing and celebration. We need to find opportunities and take time to celebrate. We need to work hard but in the same measure also rejoice and celebrate. That is why birthdays, anniversaries, testimonies of God’s goodness and work in your life are important. Some church and ministries die because of the lack of spiritual oxygen. Celebration brings oxygen we need. We not only sow hard but also expect to reap bountifully.
God works different things in different seasons. We cannot change the season that comes upon us, but we change ourselves to get the best out of the season. You may have just gone through a difficult season in some aspect of your life journey. Be encouraged because that season will end and God will lead you into another season. Be careful that you do not preoccupy yourselves with the negative experiences of the previous season e.g. fear, regret, etc. Strengthen your faith and trust the God who creates all the seasons in your life. Be bold to act in new season. He is your God works different things in different seasons.
