WHAT IS WORLD MALARIA DAY?

Recognized each year on April 25, World Malaria Day highlights the global successes reached to end malaria and innovation needed to accelerate progress.

Malaria is a treatable and preventable mosquito-borne disease, yet in 2023, the disease infected 263 million people around the world and killed 597,000 people – 74 percent of those lives lost being children under five years old.

Since 2000, leading U.S. and global malaria programs have prevented 2.2 billion cases and saved 12.7 million lives. American malaria programs like the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) work with multilateral institutions like the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi) to ensure endemic countries can chart the path toward elimination.

Continued bipartisan U.S. leadership and investments are crucial to ensure that future generations can live without fear of a child dying from a simple mosquito bite. But recent funding impacts to malaria prevention programs, insecticide and drug resistance, and humanitarian crises threaten global progress — putting millions of additional lives at risk.

Although the U.S. eliminated malaria in the 1950s, malaria knows no borders. U.S. hospitals and clinics diagnose nearly 2000 travel-related cases each year, and in 2023, Arkansas, Florida, Maryland, and Texas reported 10 locally acquired cases of malaria. Without continued investment, political will, and cross-sector collaboration, the risk of reintroduction in the U.S. and further global spread is real.

This World Malaria Day, it is crucial that we reinvest, reimagine, and reignite the fight to beat malaria. Our toolkit shares how to participate in World Malaria Day actions, social media language, and more. If you have any questions, please contact us at info@beatmalaria.org.

How to participate in World Malaria Day

1. Donate to our campaign

Your generous donations will help us continue providing critical resources to the most vulnerable communities. In 2025, your World Malaria Day donation will support refugee families and communities in Ethiopia and Uganda through our Healthy Start for Refugees Initiative, in collaboration with our sister campaign Shot@Life.

With nearly 47 million forcibly displaced children globally, refugee children are among the most marginalized and at-risk people in the world. UNHCR estimates nearly 13 million displaced people, including 6 million children, could be left without life-saving care in 2025 due to funding shortfalls.

Throughout April, all donations up to $100,000.00 raised will be matched, thanks to the Benito and Frances C. Gaguine Foundation. Donations can also be mailed to United Nations Foundation 1750 Pennsylvania Ave NW Suite 300 Washington, DC 20006. Checks should be made out to United to Beat Malaria with a note in the memo: UTBM - Healthy Start.

2. PARTICIPATE IN THE MOVE AGAINST MALARIA 5K

Go the extra "kilometer" in the fight to #BeatMalaria. Between World Malaria Day (April 25) and May 10, join supporters worldwide for the third annual Move Against Malaria 5K (#MAM5K2025 or #MoveAgainstMalaria), an event to raise awareness about malaria and support lifesaving malaria tools and programs.

Participants can engage with the event in a variety of ways. For example, you can host a 5K event in your community. We’ve also had participants swim, skateboard, and kayak their 5K. Creativity is welcome!

A special thank you to our 2025 Move Against Malaria sponsor EBC Financial Group.
