Head Teacher's Message

Dear Parents and Carers, It's hard to believe that we are not far away from the Easter holidays - it's been such a busy half term. The children have been working so hard and rising to all the challenges we give them. It was lovely to see you at our parent consultations and to share their fantastic progress. We had a great time for World Book day last week and the author visit was brilliant - she messaged after the event to say how wonderful the children were and how much she had enjoyed it too. Dinnington's Got Talent for Comic Relief is our next whole school event and we can't wait to see what's in store! Hopefully the weather will cheer up for the last couple of weeks. Please keep an eye on our school website as we are continually updating this. The most up to date school calendar is on there, curriculum information and we will also be sending out videos via our new Youtube channel (the link will also be on the website - more info to follow). Kind regards Mrs Ash and the Team

General Messages

Chinese New Year, Ramadan and Lent In 2026, we witnessed three celebrations in February. For the first time since 1863, Chinese New Year, Ramadan, and Lent all landed in the same week. This rare calendar occurrence won't happen again until 2189! Consequently, the children were involved in a whole school assembly exploring these different festivals and many helpful children shared their experiences confidently in front of the whole school. We were very proud of them.  Even though these traditions are all very different, they are all about starting fresh, being thankful, and looking out for one another. It’s a great reminder of how our different backgrounds bring us together and make our school such a vibrant place to be.

Raring2go! Spring magazine is out now - read it here: Raring2go! Newcastle & Gateshead It’s packed with information on where to go and what do for Easter to May half term. Each page links directly to the relevant website with more information so it’s a really useful resource.

Wellbeing

At last, spring is on its way! Well done to all of us who find the cold and dark a challenge, we made it through winter and can now enjoy the lighter days and the signs of spring outside. Until 21 June it will get lighter every day. Have you spotted a ladybird or a bee slowly emerging out of their hiding places into the warmer air? Have you heard the birds singing in the morning or a blackbird in the late afternoon? Noticing simple, lovely things like this can really help us calm down, get grounded and be more present for the people around us. For anyone who wants to do an activity with children looking for signs of spring in nature, here is a link to an activity pack from the RSPB. Signs of spring activity, nature waking up from its long winter sleep. One thing that helps the staff at Dinnington are monthly calendar posters from Action for Happiness that have a mindful idea for each day of the month. For example, the idea for Wednesday 4 March is “Notice how you speak to yourself and chose to use kind words.”

At school we continue to use our Dinnington Rocks values to help the children’s wellbeing and confidence, singing our school song together at top volume every Friday morning, celebrating the children’s successes and community spirit, and rewarding kindness and resilience. Here is the link on our website to our school vision and values. Dinnington First School Vision and Values At Dinnington we also check in with the children and staff regularly to ask about their well-being, and respond whenever we can to try and tweak things about the way the school is run to maximise good mental health and wellbeing for everyone. We also welcome feedback from parents and carers, thank you for all the very positive and constructive comments you send us. From all of us, thank you for your support to help make Dinnington such a happy and caring place, and we wish you a mindful and motivated March.(Ms Tustin, Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead

Nursery News

In February we continued to look at our theme of Under the Sea and enjoyed a week of learning about whales. We talked about the largest mammal – the blue whale and we learnt about blow holes amongst other facts. We read ‘The Snail and the Whale’ – we can all help each other, be kind to one another and be friends. We also focussed on Chinese New Year – 2026 is the Year of the Horse. We made a craft horse’s head which was in the shape of a triangle. Some of the children in Nursery were born in the Year of the Ox and others were born in the Year of the Tiger. Which year were you born in? We practised Chinese writing which is very different to ours. We made lanterns using the colours red and gold which are believed to be lucky colours. We tried prawn crackers which we thought were yummy and we used chopsticks for many different activities. We found Chinese New Year really interesting and lots of fun.

Reception News

This month Reception began their topic You Are What you Eat, thinking about healthy food and a balanced diet. We used non-fiction books and story books to develop their oracy and writing skills. We read Mr Wolf's Pancakes and remembered the pancakes we enjoyed eating for Pancake Day, and the story Sam's Sandwich to help us to write a list of ingredients for a sandwich and a list of instructions of how to make it. Then we made our own sandwiches and enjoyed eating and talking about them. Children also liked laying the tables, practicing using cutlery and working as a team to clear everything up afterwards. These activities have been a great opportunity for the children to try new sweet and savoury foods and think about why they like or dislike them.

Izzy - "I love cheese and ham and salad because its healthy"
Mabel - "I can spread the butter myself with my knife and I can cut it."
Riley S "Can I try some salad? I like the lettuce, its crunchy." Jack "I chopped up the banana".

Year 1 News

What an action‑packed time we’ve had in Year 1! The children have been busy becoming real-life superheroes in English as they wrote brilliant recount letters inspired by Traction Man. They retold his daring day of defeating villains with amazing detail and imagination — we were blown away by their creativity! In PE, Year 1 have been sharpening their hockey skills, learning how to hold the stick correctly, dribble with control and work as a team. We’ve also introduced skipping games, which have been a huge favourite and a fantastic way to keep everyone active and energised.

In Art, we’ve been exploring colour mixing and discovering how to make the secondary colours. The children also learned about the famous artist Andy Warhol, looking at his bright, bold Pop Art and trying out some Warhol‑inspired ideas of their own. The classroom has been full of colour and creativity!

Year 2 News

During February, Year 2 class delved into the enchanting world of Jill Tomlinson’s classic tale, The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. In our English lessons, the children showcased their creativity by planning and writing their own imaginative versions of the story. Meanwhile, in Maths, we focused our energy on mastering the 5 times tables. Through rhythmic counting, visual arrays, and problem-solving activities, the children have built great confidence in identifying patterns and recalling their multiplication facts with increasing speed. In DT we developed our woodworking skills - specifically using hammers and nails - to create some fantastic looking hedgehogs.

Year 3 News

February has been a busy and exciting month. Year 3 had a fantastic time at Woodhorn Museum, have been sharpening their cricket skills, and are fully engaged in their computing lessons—especially enjoying creating algorithms to program robots. They’ve also been exploring the early signs of spring and deepening their understanding of plant reproduction in science.

Year 4 News

Science This month, Year 4 have been exploring the digestive system and learning about the different types of teeth and their functions. The children created detailed diagrams showing the layers of a tooth by physically building each layer on top of the next with coloured paper. They also carried out an “egg experiment” to investigate how different liquids affect tooth enamel… the results were a bit disgusting but very egg-citing! The children showed brilliant curiosity and scientific thinking throughout.

Art In art, Year 4 have been working in the style of Alberto Giacometti. They began by developing their photography skills, taking dynamic photos of a partner performing an action related to sport. They also practised continuous line drawings to capture movement and form. These studies have inspired their plans for their own Giacometti‑style sculptures, which they are very excited to start creating soon out of wire and modroc.

Forest School In Forest School, Year 4 have been taking inspiration from The Wizards of Once to bring a little magic to the Wildwoods. The children created their own ‘sprites’ by moulding clay onto tree trunks and adding details using simple carving tools. They then worked together to build imaginative woodland homes for their sprites, using only natural materials they could find in the forest. Their teamwork, creativity and storytelling skills really shone through during these sessions!

Residential Our residential trip is fast approaching, and we are all very excited for this fantastic experience! Please ensure that payments are kept up to date so that everything is in place ahead of the visit. We are holding an information meeting for parents on Monday 16th March at 3:30pm in the school hall, where we will share key details and answer any questions you may have. Children are welcome to attend, although they will also be having their own Q&A session in school prior to the meeting.
