Colmore Junior School

Spring term week: 28

Highlights of the week

It has been another incredibly busy and rewarding week at Colmore, both inside and outside the classroom. One of my personal highlights has been the all the young poets visiting my office; I have thoroughly enjoyed reading a wealth of original poetry from Years 4 and 5. Some groups even took the stage in my office to perform their work aloud! Seeing their enthusiasm for language and performance has been wonderful. Adding to our literary buzz, we were delighted to welcome author Alistair Chisholm, who led some inspiring workshops with our Year 5 pupils. On the sporting front, we have much to celebrate. A huge congratulations to our Girls’ Football Team, who played a sensational match against very strong opposition to win and qualify for the semi-finals of the HMS Girls’ Cup. We are also keeping our fingers crossed for the Boys’ Football Team as they head into their final league games this afternoon—good luck, team! Finally, I am overwhelmed by the generosity shown during our Mini Marathon today. Thank you to everyone who donated or provided sponsorship. I am thrilled to announce that we have already raised over £3,000 for new outdoor equipment! We are still counting donations as they roll in, but this is a phenomenal achievement for our school. I hope you all have a lovely weekend, enjoying the sunshine. Mr. Gale Head Teacher

Year 3 became history detectives this week and had a great time finding out all about the Romans with the drama group, The Playhouse. They had to work together to discover facts and information from the artefacts provided. This then helped them to discover more about the characters that were being brought to life.

Year 5 had a visit from the Scottish author, Alastair Chisholm. He shared his collection of books, I Am Raven, I Am Wolf and I Am Dragon. The children found out all about how he became an author and took part in a competition to win badges and stickers! Huge thanks to How Brave is the Wren for providing this opportunity.

Year 4 created some incredible haikus on Thursday. They had to think very carefully about their choice of words and the number of syllables whilst also making sure the poems made sense. Here are two wonderful examples from 4R, they just had to be shared.
Year 5 have also been creating some brilliant poems this week. They were inspired by the poem McCavity the Cat and made these very unworried alternative verses!
This wonderful and very accurate description poem is by Rocco!
Another fantastic performance from our netball team this week, earning a well-fought 6–6 draw against St Laurence. A special well done to Poppy, who was deservedly named Player of the Match!

Congratulations to the girls football team, winning their quarter final match, 3-2 after extra time. A great game, with both teams working extremely hard. Huge thanks to Mr Smith as always!

What a fantastic, active day at Colmore with all year groups taking part in the TCS Mini Marathon for schools event. Children have challenged themselves to complete 8 laps of Grove Road field, which amounts to around 2 miles in total. It was so great to see so many enthusiastic and resilient runners. Well done!  A big thank you to all those who have sponsored the pupils. We have currently raised over £3000 to put towards some more active playground equipment.A special shout-out to Kaiden in Year 4 who has raised over £400. How amazing,!  The raffle winners will be announced next week.

4R looked at the forces involved in buoyancy by trying to change the shape of a ball of plasticine so that it would float. They worked so well to identify the forces at work.
Forest School got up and running this week. Mr Hughes took groups of children to the science garden to take part in a whole host of different activities including decorating pieces of wood.

Year 3 have been using their oracy skills to rehearse their writing. They used the story of the Elves and the Shoemaker to help them to retell the story before writing it in their books.

Children in 4R organised a charity sale at playtime for Acorns and managed to raise an incredible £95! What fantastic work!

Year 6 have been carrying out research on extreme weather. They worked in groups to create these super posters.

The newsletters are also accessible on the news section of our school website.
