Movie Night featuring films selected by SU's Environmental Studies students from the American Conservation Film Festival's 2023 Official Selections!

5:00 - 5:20pm: "Ask an Environmentalist!" Dr. Beth Jones from the Biology Department and Dr. Allyson Degrassi from the Environmental Studies and Biology Departments, are ready to answer your questions and converse about the state of our world and ongoing research! Ask questions to be entered into a raffle for prizes!

5:00 - 5:20pm - Concession Stand! Light snacks pr and good conversation. Seating at 5:25 for "Welcome" by Allyson Degrassi, Professor of Environmental Studies, and Hilary Lo of the American Conservation Film Festival.

5:30 - 5:37pm - "Feeling the Apocalypse" - a student created film about a psychotherapist struggling with climate anxiety explores what it means to live in a dying world.

5:37-5:48pm - "Shaba"- a film about a Samburu community in northern Kenya who is building a sanctuary for orphaned elephants to rehabilitate them back to the wild.

5:48-6:12pm - "Peace Pipeline" - a film about comedian indigenous activists plans to reroute Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline through cemeteries, golf courses, and backyards of Duluth, Minnesota's of predominately white neighborhoods.

6:12 - 6:30pm - Short Intermission!

6:30 - 8:15pm - "Path of the Panther" a film about a coalition of biologists, ranchers, conservationists, and indigenous peoples on the front lines of battle among the forces of human development, Everglades destruction, and the disappearing Florida panther.

Meet at Sarah's Glen for supplies- boots and waders are limited supply! Get there early to jump in the creek! Weather pending! It will be cancelled for rain or if water is too high.

Abrams Creek Wetland Preserve Nature Walks- 10/07, 10/21, 11/04. @ 8:30am - 10:30am. Meet Jim Smith at the intersection of Jubal Early, Handley and Meadow Branch Ave- Winchester VA. "Join your guide Jim Smith for a family friendly learning experience on our native wetlands!"

Aquatic Biology and Stream Ecology - 10/05 @ 7:00pm -8:00 pm- Laurel Ridge Community College Science Room 145. "SU Professor Josh Kincaid will discuss aquatic biology and stream ecology. Offered in conjunction with STEM Club and Trout Unlimited."

Pollinators and Restoration Landscapes- 11/02 @ 7:00pm-8:00pm SU- Halpin-Harrison Hall. "Sustainability Matters offers a presentation on pollinators and restoration landscape!"

Wild Night with Wildlife!

Join us to learn about our native wildlife species! The Blue Ridge Wildlife Center's Education Director CJ is going to tell us about wildlife and rehabilitation for injured animals. And, he is going to bring some wildlife Ambassadors for us to meet!

Join us for the "Sustainability Extravaganza" hosted by FYS- There's NO Planet B, Environmental Studies, and Student Services!

If you would like to donate items for the event and swap, please contact Marshell or Ally! We can collect the items for you! We really appreciate your donations and participation!

Main Events!

  • Fashion Show! Previously Loved clothes and attire can be loved again by someone new! Just say NO to fast fashion!
  • Stuff Swap! Please bring items that you want to say good-bye to, and pick up items that you want to say hello to! FREE STUFF SWAP! There are clothes, shoes, kitchen wares, school supplies, and MORE!
  • BYORB!!!-- Bring Your Own REUSABLE BAG or a couple of bags! There was a lot of stuff to grab last year!

Cofan Women's Association-

Cofan Women's Association- The Cofan people of the Ecuadorian Amazon have been struggling to make ends meet with unsustainable coffee growing practices, but NOW they are making a living through a exciting range of 100% sustainably-made rainforest products (e.g. bags, bracelets, necklaces, etc..). Visit the booth and learn more about the Cofan people and their products! SU's own Dr. Giles Jackson from the School of Business has been working with the Cofan people to launch this exciting social enterprise, with help from SU students led by Emma Reed! These items are for purchase and 100% of the profits go back to the Cofan Women's Association! ALSO for every product sold, a new hardwood tree is planted in the old coffee plantation! (AND... discount at the Eco-Extravaganza booth!)
