The musical narrates the unique relationship between St. Théodore Guérin and Sister Theodosia Mug. Sister Mug is St. Théodore Guérin’s official biographer and is the recipient of the first miracle attributed to St. Théodore Guérin. While they never met on earth, I imagine that they were good friends. Through the story, I want to encourage others to see Mother Guérin as an intercessor and let her example guide their faith.
We are excited to open our new space. As we look forward to this new chapter, our first major event is dedicated to our patroness, St. Théodore Guérin. Her story is central to our community, and by honoring her today, we show our gratitude and mark a meaningful new beginning.
I have always loved the iconic photo of Mother Guérin, but I often hear students say that she looks scary. So while keeping the iconic look, I wanted this image not to be scary. I wanted a Mother Guérin who invites all who despair. If you suffer because of family loss, illness, discrimination, or conflict with others, she is for you. The lack of features on her face invites the viewer not to be afraid but to surrender, as she did, to the Providence that never fails. Also, in her iconic photo, she has no halo. I wanted her to have a halo that symbolizes how her love and goodness reach out to us, keeping us focused on God. The image was placed off-center to remind us of her great humility; only God can be the center of all things. The color palette comes from the ocean and the woods. The water that inspired her as a child, and the place of her greatest mission, where she poured herself out and died. Here, on the scapula, you see the image of the Linden leaf, a bridge between France and the United States. I am so grateful for the help of Chloe Kennedy (’18) and Kelly Kijovsky for bringing this image to life.

Karen's scientific mind is a great asset to the stage.
When I tell people I've written a musical, it sounds absurd—I knew nothing about writing musicals. But Mother Guerin's impact on my life inspired me to believe, with her prayers, that anything is possible. For years, Mike Panasuk, Mark Duray, and I have discussed creating a show to honor our patroness. For a decade, I have thought about this story. How could I tell the story of a woman who experienced tragedy, suffering, and discrimination, without making the musical overwhelmingly sad? Despite her hardships, Mother Guerin is joyful, humorous, and loving. My prayers and reading about her led me to this story. Recently, I've spent time researching not only Mother Guerin but also Sr. Theodosia Mug, Celestine de la Hailendière, Sr. Francis Xavier, Sr. Marie Kevin, and the people of their eras. This show is not strictly non-fiction; I imagined conversations and adapted the story for the stage. The unique space inspired me to convey the story's key point. I couldn't have done this without the amazing adults and students who supported me. Creating this show reaffirmed our department's mission: to honor God as the Creator, seek beauty, and become lifelong artists. The collaboration with students and adults brought these values—and our tribute to Mother Guerin—to life. It has been a gift to witness everyone embrace this shared purpose, glorifying God and celebrating our patroness. This project was a true team accomplishment. I am grateful to everyone who contributed through prayers, encouragement, support, and creativity. Special thanks to Sarah May, whose music kept the project moving and inspired me when I doubted myself. Mike Panasuk's vision, Karen Kennedy's perspective, and Angie Goćur's positivity and outreach strengthened our mission to honor Mother Guerin. Each person's efforts helped transform a tribute into a meaningful, inspiring show. I want to thank my husband, David, for his unending support and, finally, God. He never fails!

When I first heard the plan for the 2026 Spring Musical, I can’t lie: I was scared. I had never heard of something like this before, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. There was no playlist of songs I could listen to on Spotify, no videos of past performances I could watch to get an idea of what it would be like, no previous casts offering advice on performing this show. I knew from the very beginning that this musical was going to challenge me. And challenge me—and the whole cast—it did. We overcame many challenges in making this show into the production you are watching today. However, I have loved being able to tell this story on our incredible new stage, I have loved getting close to the rest of the cast during rehearsal, and I have loved learning more about Mother Guerin. Initially I had thought that a show about Mother Guerin would be sad, as she had such a difficult life. However, Mother Guerin lived with such great joy—the joy of Christ. Through all of her struggles, she kept her faith. Through this process, Mother Guerin has become such an inspiration to me to persevere and remain optimistic even on the hardest days. In the longest rehearsals when it felt like the show would never come together, I thought about Mother Guerin and how she was praying for us; I thought about why this musical needed to happen. It wouldn’t make sense to tell a sad story about her, because even though there were difficult moments, she was close to the Lord. Mother Guerin is an incredible woman, and I am so glad I get to tell her story with the rest of the cast.

“What a sweet providence it is to find friends thus willing to assist us.”
– Saint Mother Theodore Guerin
I began writing this about two years ago. Looking back, it is clear I had no idea of what I was doing, especially musically, and dove into the project with ignorant bliss. Around that same time, we began interviewing for a music position. Specifically, someone to teach orchestra. We interviewed one candidate who opened with, “I went to a small Catholic High School in Rockford, Illinois.” I went to a small Catholic High School in Rockford, Illinois! There was only one Catholic high school in Rockford. We hired this candidate, Sarah May, and she has been an amazing orchestra teacher, choir director, songwriting teacher, and piano teacher... the list goes on. Little did I know that she was also a published composer. What I needed the most, God gave me.
“Have confidence in the Providence that so far has never failed us.”
– Saint Mother Theodore Guerin
I spent many walks considering how best to tell this story and emphasize the theme of storytelling, so I needed a narrator. Three summers ago, it came to me that Theodosia Mug could fill this role. I discovered that she wrote the official biography of Mother Guerin, The Life and Life-Work of Mother Theodore Guerin, Foundress of the Sisters of Providence at Vigo County, Indiana. She seemed like a perfect choice. She was from Indiana, and she loved writing. Despite having read every book about Mother Guerin, I hadn’t read that one. I looked at local libraries, but couldn’t find it. A week after this decision, I heard from a former student. He wanted to meet for lunch, but I had other obligations. He told me he had a gift for me, but he’d leave it in front of my office door. When I went to work the following week, I found the gift. It was a copy of Sr. Theodosia’s book! When I called to thank him and tell him what a treasure it was. He told me that he had been wandering through a used bookstore in Nebraska, found it, and thought of me. He had no idea of the project I was working on.
“As for myself, I am full of confidence; the good God will still come to our assistance, for "there is no imperfection in [God's] works."
– Saint Mother Theodore Guerin
I knew early on I wanted to have Sr. Marie Kevin in the story. She was the promoter of the cause for Mother Guerin’s canonization. When the school opened, she came several times to tell the students about Mother Guerin and to pass out second-class relics. She was even present at the groundbreaking for the original building. While there, she fell into the mud! The mother of Colleen Ward, our Marketing Director (she hadn’t been hired yet), took Sr. Marie Kevin home, cleaned her up, and bought her a new set of clothing. About a month ago, I began searching for a costume for Sophia M., who plays Sr. Marie Kevin Tighe, but couldn’t find a suitable suit. I asked Colleen to check with her mother about borrowing one. A week later, Colleen happily told me her mother had the perfect suit. When Sr. Marie Kevin passed away in 2014, the Sisters of Providence returned her suit to Mrs. Creamer, who then gave it to Colleen for me. So Sophia M. is wearing a suit that was actually worn by Sr. Marie Kevin Tighe!
