Welcome to Pirate Nation!

PirateID (Username) and Password — All new ECU students are assigned a unique PirateID to access resources like PiratePort, Canvas, Microsoft 365, Webex, and more. Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Activate your ECU account. Once you receive your PirateID (username) and temporary password through your private email, you must activate your account and create a password in ECU's password management system, PirateID Self Service.
  2. Set up account authentication. After activating your account and creating a passphrase, log in to your ECU email at https://mymail.ecu.edu. You’ll be prompted to set up a preferred default method of two-step verification.

After activating your account and setting up authentication, you won’t be required to update your ECU password for 365 days!

ecu id

ECU ID — Your ECU ID is a numerical identifier different from your PirateID. Find your ECU ID in PiratePort.

Network and wireless: Get connected, securely. Set up internet-ready devices on campus. home wifi suggestions.

WAYS TO GET CONNECTED

Eduroam — ECU’s primary network is more than access to ECU resources and the internet. Enroll once for four years of access anywhere Eduroam is available – including many other UNC campuses.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) — ECU’s VPN is a secure connection between an off-campus computer and on-campus resources. Login link: remoteaccess.ecu.edu.

LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES

Canvas Learning Management System — Canvas is ECU’s learning management system. Canvas allows students to access course content, post to discussion forums, check grades, submit assignments, and more. Students can also use the Canvas Student app to participate in courses and to receive mobile notifications about assignment due dates.

Portfolium electronic portfolio management system — A portfolio is a collection of coursework and other evidence of learned skills you can show to potential employers or clients. Portfolium is available through Canvas. ECU students have lifetime access to their Portfolium portfolio.

Poll Everywhere — This is a student engagement tool that allows students and instructors to communicate during lectures. It offers several polling and quizzing options so instructors can gather feedback and determine student retention for specific topics. Students can participate in live online polling, surveys, Q&As, quizzes, word clouds, and more.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AT NO COST

LinkedIn Learning — Access entire courses or individual training videos on software or business skills, 24/7 from your computer, iOS or Android mobile device. ECU provides all users with an account.

SAS Training Discounts Program — ECU students have access to selected SAS courses at no cost. Choose from a curriculum of SAS, JMP and statistical courses offered in the traditional classroom setting, Live Web classroom, or Self-Paced e-Learning.

Student COMPUTERS AND PRINTING

Student computer requirements and recommendations — Visit the ITCS website to see which academic degree programs require or recommend that students have access to a computer that meets minimum specifications. Check with your academic advisor before making a final decision on a computer!

Students can search the computer lab database to find a campus computer lab. All students have a $30 yearly allowance to print, copy, or scan classwork in labs and wireless printing stations on campus.

Communication and Collaboration: Stay informed. Instant message an instructor. Web conference on- and off-campus.

EMAIL

ECU Email — Access your email through your Microsoft 365 account. Students are provided five Office suite downloads, OneDrive cloud storage, the Teams collaboration tool, and other productivity apps. Mailbox space is 100GB. Learn more about your email account through this Email Features Overview. Microsoft 365 login: pirate365.ecu.edu.

CONFERENCING

Microsoft Teams — Teams provides a chat-centered workspace to bring project teams, project files, and collaborative tools into a single interface for instant and organized access. Access Teams: 1) on the web at pirate365.ecu.edu, 2) with the desktop app for your computer and 3) through the mobile app.

WebEx — A suite of online meeting tools that allow you to meet with participants inside and outside of ECU using your computer and/or telephone. Hosts can manage participants, lock the meeting to prevent additional attendees, and record the session. These Webex tutorials can help you get started.

MOST POPULAR SOFTWARE AT ECU

Microsoft Office — Access your Microsoft 365 subscription through pirate365.ecu.edu and click the app launcher (hamburger icon) in the upper left to open all available apps. Mobile versions available for most.

Your subscription includes five downloads of Microsoft Office (full version) for your personal computers, both Mac and Windows. The installs are active until you graduate or leave ECU. Connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to verify your subscription. Log in to pirate365.ecu.edu to access the download link - "Install and more" - in the far right corner on the home page.

Statistical Software — Mathematica, SAS, SPSS, and more are available to students. Two survey/research tools include Qualtrics and REDCap.

Adobe Creative Cloud — A suite of desktop and mobile applications used for graphic design, video/photography editing, web development, and more.

Virtual Computing Lab (VCL)

ECU's Virtual Computer Lab (VCL) — Students can remotely log on to the VCL Windows desktop from home or campus computer lab to access educational software used to complete class assignments. Once connected, the VCL also connects to your OneDrive cloud storage where you will save your work.

Web: build a website for academic work or research.

DO-IT-YOURSELF TOOLS AND SERVICES

MyWeb — Self-service portal where ECU faculty, staff, and students can create their own academic website. Creating a website in this web space requires basic knowledge of HTML. Sites have a 500MB quota. To get started, log into piratepanel.ecu.edu.

ECU Technology Requirements and Guidelines — Familiarize yourself with the University Student and Employee Computer Use Regulation, University Statement on Copyright, and ECU File Sharing guidelines to ensure compliance with university, local, state, and federal rules and laws.

Protecting Sensitive Data — ECU users are responsible for the protection of any sensitive data in their custody. This includes electronic, print, voice, or any other form in which the data is captured. Some examples of sensitive information include: social security numbers (SSN), credit/debit card numbers, and driver's license numbers. Do not download sensitive data from ECU administrative systems to a desktop, laptop, web server, smartphone, tablet, or other device unless absolutely required, prior approval is obtained, physical security controls are active on the device, and mobile device encryption is in place.

STORAGE: SECURE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR FILE STORAGE NEEDS.

STORAGE OPTIONS AND GUIDELINES

OneDrive Cloud Storage (recommended) — the only approved cloud storage solution for ECU. Approved for all file types, including sensitive information like HIPAA and FERPA. Sync with your computer and use as a backup destination (Please keep sensitive information in a non-synced folder). Create and edit documents online.

Piratedrive — Network-attached storage (NAS). No sync or automatic backup option. Approved for all file types, including sensitive information. Mapped as the “U” drive on your computer when on campus.

STAY UP TO DATE ON SECURITY PRACTICES AND NEWS

Visit the Security Awareness for ECU Faculty, Staff, and Students website for information on identity theft and phishing scams, fake news, and much more.

Self-enroll in the Cybersecurity Awareness Fundamentals Canvas course (login required) for students comprised of video content that can be completed in about an hour. The goal of the course is to empower students to stay cyber secure, build a culture of security, and better protect IT systems, data, and identity.

IT Service Catalog (SC) — Your one-stop location where you can find the technology resources and service offerings available at ECU. Information includes a description of the service, eligibility, cost, process for requesting service, self-help resources, and support contact.

ECU IT DO-IT-YOURSELF

IT Knowledge Base (KB) — Centralized self-service documentation that helps you find information about how to use IT services at ECU. Search the KB for tutorials, FAQs, and instructional videos.

Know where to find the latest IT NEWS AND INFORMATION

ECU Technology News — Informs you of new technology services, provides instructional information on IT resources and tools, and reminds you of IT policies and guidelines. (sent to your ECU email address)

ITCS Notifications — Informs you of ECU system and application downtime and planned maintenance. (sent to your ECU email address and posted at itcs.ecu.edu.)
