EVENT: OPEN MIC POETRY NIGHT

Thursday the 5th October is National Poetry Day!

Why not take part yourself? There are 10 slots for poets and the event will not only be live but also be published as a Poetry Podcast on Spotify. Each slot is a maximum of 5 minutes and you can either read your own work or your favourite piece. Remember, this evening will be "family friendly".

The theme for this year's event is "Refuge" and we have a very special guest poet that many of us may recognise. Last year's Open Mic Poetry event was such a big success that we are going to do it all again.

Our Staff and Students are incredibly talented, why not come along and see? Tickets will go fast.

ARTICLE: WOMEN IN DESIGN: SYLVIA ABERNATHY

What happens to the women of whom we don’t have a record of their work, either because they were not connected to larger institutions, further marginalized by their identities, or consolidated into the industry mythos of the men around them?

The article begins. "Sylvia Abernathy was a figure whose enigmatic presence in the late ‘60s Chicago Black arts scene is somewhat known, but not deeply detailed. Renaming herself Laini in the ‘70s alongside husband, collaborator, and photographer Fundi (formerly Billy), Abernathy played a role in several projects that prominently intersected Black artists with politics. She and Fundi are mentioned sporadically in texts regarding the Black Arts Movement of Chicago, but essentially don’t come up after a certain point in the ‘70s."

TV: PICASSO: THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Pablo Picasso is regarded as the greatest ever artists. He revolutionised art as we know it, exploring a huge range of topics. His abstract portraits have shocked the world throughout their lives, yet he was able to paint in an incredibly realistic way and chose to explore what painting could be.

Whilst he was well known for not being the greatest guy, but like many people, his talent meant people were prepared to ignore it. This BBC documentary explores this part of his story and his mistreatment of the people around him. The Beast that created such beauty. An interesting exploration into this part of his life, and wondering can we look upon him with 2023 standards and does his behaviour take away from the art itself.

You'll have to check when it is open to go inside and Gorton is still a bit rough around the edges but if you are in to Gothic Architecture, it does not get much better.
