September 10-16 is Suicide Prevention Week

Last week's Blast and Baby Blast focused on September being Suicide Prevention Month and Recovery Happens Month. This week, for Suicide Prevention Week, we are including a special focus on the power of sharing hope. During Suicide Prevention Week and beyond, sharing can create a sense of belonging while also reducing the weight of our burdens.

The act of sharing can also serve as a powerful tool in suicide prevention. By sharing hope with one another and throughout our communities, we can support and help connect individuals to resources. Attend events, get involved and find support at SMCHealth.org/SPM. And remember, for immediate help, you can connect 24/7 to free confidential crisis support:

Recap of Senator Becker's Fentanyl Crisis Town Hall

In case you missed Senator Becker's Town Hall on the Fentanyl Crisis, a recording is now available to view on-demand:

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • ADDICTION RISK: “Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. It is a major contributor to fatal and non-fatal overdoses in the U.S.,” according to the C.D.C.’s article, “Fentanyl Facts.”
  • GET NARCAN: Having ready access to Naloxone, also known as Narcan, will save lives, in the event of an overdose. Narcan will be available without prescription soon. Meanwhile, you can get it at the following sites now: One Life Counseling Center (San Carlos), Alexian Health Clinic (San Jose), Central Valley Clinic (San Jose), South County Clinic (San Martin)
  • TALK TO YOUR KIDS: Learn new and effective techniques on how to speak with your child about drugs at the New Drug Talk Parent Portal, where you can find helpful tools and information to guide your next conversation.
  • DON’T TRUST FAKE PILLS: Since pills cannot be tested reliably, only take pills dispensed legally from pharmacists. So many fake pills are contaminated with fentanyl, and one dose can be lethal.
  • TEST STRIPS: Test strips are a good harm reduction tactic. In a college environment, drugs will be used recreationally within social circles, and having test strips ready creates a culture where all drugs are tested.
  • GET HELP: To get help for yourself or a loved one in San Mateo County who has substance use and abuse issues, please visit County Health's Substance Use Treatment Service webpageg or call (800) 686-0101.

COVID Community Updates

CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get an updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect against the potentially serious outcomes of COVID-19 illness this fall and winter. Updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna will be available later this week. Check vaccines.gov to find a COVID-19 vaccine location near you.

Vaccination remains the best protection against COVID-19-related hospitalization and death. Vaccination also reduces your chance of suffering the effects of Long COVID, which can develop during or following acute infection and last for an extended duration. If you have not received a COVID-19 vaccine in the past 2 months, get an updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect yourself this fall and winter.

Masks are optional at all City facilities. City Hall's Public Walk-In Hours are M, Tu, Th: 9-4, W: 9-7, and F: 9-12. View our online services to get city business taken care of from the comfort of home.
