Exploring the Intersection of Advertising and Design in Seoul: A Transformative Study Abroad Experience

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to lead a group of ten talented students from Miami Dade College on a 28-day study abroad trip to Seoul, South Korea. Our journey was more than just a visit; it was an immersive experience in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant cities, focusing on the intersection of advertising and design from a global perspective.

Our adventure took us to some of Seoul’s most iconic locations, including the bustling streets of Myeongdong, the top of Namsan Tower, the cultural richness of Insadong, the historical charm of Bukchon Hanok Village, the majestic Suwon Fortress, and the grand Gyeongbok-gung Palace. Each location offered a unique backdrop, enriching our understanding of how culture and environment influence advertising and design.

Walking through Seoul, we felt the city's vibrant energy in its museums, art galleries, cafes, and street markets. The city seemed to come alive with creativity and innovation at every turn. From the innovative architecture and intricate sculptures to the colorful street art that seemed to pop up everywhere, we were constantly inspired by our surroundings. These experiences highlighted how Seoul beautifully blends its rich traditions with the latest trends in design.

A highlight of our trip was visiting the Korean Calligraphy Museum, where students learned about the history of Korean typography. They were then assigned to create a poster using Korean characters, blending traditional techniques with modern design principles. Additionally, students explored color theory and symbolism from a South Korean perspective, taking photos around the city of Seoul that reflected the rich South Korean culture.

To deepen our engagement, I assigned the students a series of creative projects. They were tasked with creating postcards from their own photographs, developing a photo essay on a topic of their choice, and producing a one-minute reflection video that encapsulated their experiences. These assignments not only honed their technical skills but also encouraged them to view advertising and design through a culturally enriched lens.

This journey through Seoul was more than an educational trip; it was a transformative experience that broadened our horizons and deepened our appreciation for the power of design in a global context. Our time in Seoul has left a lasting impression on us all, inspiring a new generation of MDC students who now think globally and have learned to apply these international insights to their local communities, enhancing their approach to advertising and design with the rich cultural knowledge gained from South Korea.
