Parent Survey
A huge thank you to the 136 families that took the time to complete our annual parent/carer survey. As promised, here is a summary of the responses:

- 99% agree that school tells them what their child is learning throughout the year
- 97% stated that when concerns have been raised with school, they have been dealt with properly.
- 99% of parents and carers feel able to approach staff at school if they have any concerns
- SEND- 23 families who responded had a child with special educational needs. 83% of these parents/carers said their child receives the support they need at school.
- 90% of families agree that school has high expectations for their child. We need to explain to parents and families how we do this in school. We will aim to work on this in the new academic year.

- 99% believe the school supports their child’s wider development
- 97% of families would recommend Grange First School to another parent
What do you think the school does well? Some of the things that came up frequently were:
- Staff are friendly and approachable
- Dedicated, nuturing staff
- Excellent teaching and children make great progress
- Superb PTFA
- The wider curriculum- OPAL, Forest School, special events, visits
- Warm, welcoming ethos
- Inclusive and supportive school where everyone is respected
- Excellent communication
I’m very grateful for everything Grange has done, it’s been a wonderful place for my daughter to grow, learn, and feel happy every day.
We absolutely love everything about Grange and feel so lucky to have it as our first school. It's given our child a brilliant grounding across so many things - academic, social and extras too.
This school and the staff are exceptional!
Is there anything we could do to improve? Some of the things that came up frequently were:
- Sports Days on different days- we will do this next year
- Better communication for parents if their child attends TreeTops as they miss the little interactions at the start and end of the school day – we will discuss this as a staff group and work out how we can improve on this.
- More bike and scooter storage – a member of our PTFA is currently working on this
- More updates on Facebook and from all classes – we will aim to do this from September
- More clubs – there is a limit to how many we can provide as we only have one school hall. We already have 3 or 4 clubs taking place after school, at lunchtime and before school each week. This doesn’t include some clubs like KS2 sewing club which take place for one term or Year 2 maths club which takes place for one term etc. There are also several more informally run clubs at lunchtime- loom band club, Swifty Club, Times Table Rockstars…We try to provide a balance between clubs which are free and those which are run by external providers and have a cost associated with them. We will continue to look for any additional club opportunities that we can provide.
- More homework – We can never please everyone with this one. Some parents want more and some want less. Our goal is to strike a healthy balance that supports learning without over burdening children or families. To accommodate different preferences, we aim to provide core tasks. We send home KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) every half term in maths and we also ask you to read with your child every night. We also ask you to support us with spellings at home. We send home half term topic planners so that you know what we are teaching in class in all subject areas. If you would like extra homework to do, you could do some work linked to the topic. We always love to see any extra homework children choose to do at home.
- Music clubs or tuition to learn an instrument- Mrs Price, our music lead, runs a school choir but we don’t currently have a peripatetic teacher who comes to school. I will look into this to see if we can find one.
- Learning a language in Year 3 and 4 – We teach the children Spanish in year 3 and 4. They then continue with this in Year 5 and 6 at middle school. We have a French Club at lunchtimes for Yr1-4 that runs all year and a Reception Club which starts in January.
- KS2 toilets- we will be returning to male and female toilets for our KS2 pupils in September
OPAL Play
Many of you mentioned OPAL play in your survey responses and how much you value it. It takes a lot of time and effort to maintain this as I’m sure you appreciate. We are experiencing some problems on the Forest School Yard in the mornings before school starts. Please do NOT let your children move the equipment or play with things. It took a member of staff an hour to tidy up over turned tables & chairs and to tidy up the resources that had been strewn everywhere. Thank you for your support with this.
We have two tree inspections each year and we always follow their advice regarding any trees that may need to be felled. We have a tree in the forest area along the driveway that needs to be removed. As it is next to the metro track it requires us to work with Nexus. This is taking a little time to organise so as a precaution, we have closed off this area to the children at all times. There is no immediate risk but the safety of our children is always our first priority. Please ensure your child does not enter this area at drop off or pick up times.
Money Snake Challenge!
Well I didn’t expect the snakes to be that long when I set the cones up in the morning! You have blown us away with your generosity. The children have all helped to lay the coins out in long snake like lines. There was a wonderful sense of competition between the classes and staff. Some staff took metre rulers out to ensure their lines were as straight as possible!
The longest snake belonged to Sycamore Class and they will win a prize from the PTFA! A HUGE thank you for your donations. The children are busy sorting and counting the money this afternoon and we will then pass it to the PTFA to total up.
School Reports
Unfortunately, there have been some technical issues with reports this year. We are limited by our email provider, in the size of file we can send to you. Because we like to include photographs in our school reports, the PDFs are too big to send. We are in the process of compressing these files but this does mean that you won’t receive your child’s end of year report until next week. Apologies for this. I can promise you that they are worth waiting for though- the teachers have taken an enormous amount of time and effort to capture the essence of each and every child they teach. I am sure you are all going to be very proud of your child’s achievements this year.
Goodbye!
We are always very sad when staff leave Grange First School but know that it is part of school life. Mrs Blanks who has been with us for nearly two years is moving on at the end of term. She is an outstanding Nursery teacher and has gone above and beyond to support our youngest children at school. She has given them a fabulous start to their education at Grange. Thank you Mrs Blanks!
We are also losing Norma Hayes from TreeTops- she has chosen to retire and is looking forward to going on holidays during term time! Mrs Hayes has been with us for 8 years initially as a lunch time supervisor and then as a member of staff at TreeTops. We would like to thank her for all her hard work and hope she enjoys lots of sunny holidays in the years to come.
Mrs Collins has only been with us for a few months on a temporary basis in Nursery and has done a fantastic job; Mrs Collins has just returned to work in education after having many years at home to raise her own children. We are delighted that she has secured a permanent role at a school in Newcastle as a learning support assistant. Good luck in your new job!
I would like to share the lovely news that Mrs Robson will be starting her maternity leave at the end of term. I’m sure you will us in wishing her all the best during this exciting time. I will update you in September with her happy news!
Miss Tutt is getting married during the summer holidays and will return to school as Mrs Williams. Congratulations Miss Tutt! We all hope you have a wonderful day and we are looking forward to seeing the photographs of you in your beautiful dress!
Year 1 Wonderful Writing
Year 1 have been very busy in English this week writing their own story based on 'I want my hat back' by Jon Klassen. The teachers were blown away by how brilliant the stories were and it was amazing to look back and see how much progress the children had made this year! We then made trioramas using the story as inspiration to create the characters and setting! Oscar used our snack and story book 'Zoe and Beans: Hello Oscar!' by Chloe and Mick Inkpen for his!
