Grange First Weekly News Week 4 Summer 1 - 22.05.25

A Wonderful First Week Back!

We’ve had a fantastic start to the new half term with an exciting journey around the world — without even leaving school! As part of our Physical Week, we visited every continent and explored traditional games and sports from different cultures.

From North America, we enjoyed learning and playing Handball and American Football. It was a great way to develop our teamwork, coordination, and communication skills

Next, we travelled to Asia, where we tried our hand at Kabaddi — a fast-paced and strategic team game that really tested our agility and teamwork.

In South America, we had the exciting opportunity to play Futsal with two coaches. It was a brilliant chance to practise ball control, quick passes, and sharp footwork.

Over in Africa, we explored rhythm and movement through African Dancing, learning how to move to the beat and express ourselves through dance.

Our visit to Europe introduced us to the energetic game of Handball. We found out that a point is scored by throwing the ball at a small trampoline — and we weren’t allowed to move our feet while holding the ball, which made it a real challenge! It’s a good job our throwing and catching skills were so strong.

Finally, in Australasia, we learned the powerful and expressive Haka Dance, gaining insight into its cultural significance and practising the movements with great enthusiasm.

It’s been a week full of learning, laughter, and global adventure — all through sport and dance. What a brilliant way to begin the term!

Joe Fishburn, a 24-year-old Team GB gymnast from Scarborough, is the male winner of the second series of the BBC's Gladiators. He won the grand final against Mus Dumbuya.

Joe Fishburn is also a Team Gym gymnast and has won two European medals and six national titles. He visited Grange on Monday and inspired us all!

Sports Days

As if that wasn’t enough excitement, we also held Sports Days this week for Reception to Year 4. The children had a fantastic time taking part in hurdles, sack races, running, throwing, bouncing on space hoppers, and so much more. A big thank you to all the parents who came along to cheer the children on — your support means so much!

Thank you to the parents who took part in some of our Year 3 activities. I think they enjoyed themselves!!

Unfortunately, the rain on Tuesday meant we had to postpone Nursery Sports Day, but we’re looking forward to seeing them shine on Tuesday 17th June instead.

Early Years

Our dedicated Early Years staff work hard to create inspiring and exciting opportunities for your children to learn through play. In Nursery, the children have thoroughly enjoyed travelling on our very own Grange aeroplane to holiday destinations around the world. They’ve embraced their roles as captains, cabin crew, and passengers — complete with their own passports!

In Reception, the children have been enjoying a wonderful small world area filled with diggers and trucks — a fantastic space for imaginative play and exploration. They’re now busy creating an airport and a beach scene, so watch this space for exciting updates!

PTFA

Don't forget it's non-uniform day on Wednesday 11th June in return for donations to help us with the summer fair.

Nursery & Reception - Sweets & Cakes (please make sure everything is nut free and we would love some Eid themed treats as well as halal sweets)

Year 1&2 - Tombola Items (trinkets, small toys, toiletries, tins etc.)

Year 3&4 - Bottles of any kind (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)

We are also asking for donations of toys and books in good condition including any party bag toys that you may have collected.

This year we are offering 2 options on the bouncy castle. 1 x 10min bunce will cost £2.50 paid for on the day or your child can have unlimited bounces for £3.50 which needs to be booked in advance. Use the QR code sent with this email to pay in advance then on the day you can collect a wristband on arrival. If you are buying for more than one child, you will need to do multiple transactions. Please make sure you tell us the name of each child when booking.

It would be really helpful if we had a few more volunteers to help us run all the stalls so if you can spare a couple of hours to help, please leave your name at the office or email us grangefirstparents.co.uk

Finally, we were so lucky to have Joe Fishburn, the current male Gladiators champion, visit us on Tuesday to kick off physical week. Joe talked to the children about overcoming adversity, the importance of failure and never giving up. The best bit though, was the press up challenge against Mr. Mac!

This was paid for by the PTFA with some of the money we've raised this year so thank you to all parents for your support with our events, it helps us to pay for these brilliant experiences for our children.

Joe offers a free taster session to his gymnastics and cheerleading sessions held at RGS on Sundays. If you want find out more about them have a look at the website.

A Few Reminders

Jewelry: Children are only allowed to wear a watch and a small plain pair of stud earrings. No bracelets, necklaces or larger earrings- this is for safety reasons. Our children play outside in OPAL play climbing, running, jumping, participating in sports and play in our forest area daily and we want them to do this safely.

Thank you for sending your child to school with a water bottle each day. This is so important to keep them hydrated especially in the summer months. All water bottles should have a sports top and of a medium size. Please don't send your child to school with a huge Stanley drinking cup. We allow children to refill their bottles throughout the day so they don't need something this large.

Our Forest Yard outside the Year 1, Year 2 and the Reception classrooms is very busy at drop off and pick up. We have it set up with a mud kitchen, themed role play, a water area etc so that the children can enjoy imaginative and exciting playtimes. However, this does mean that children are not able to ride scooters or to play with balls on this yard before school or at pick up time as it is not safe.
