The Reading & Writing Center at the Learning SPOT

Miami Dade College | Wolfson Campus | English and Communication Department

Overseen by the English and Communication Department, the Learning Spot is an academic support center for currently enrolled Miami Dade College students. Located in room 2301, the center has computers, workstations, lounge areas, and study rooms for student use. Available computer software programs include the Adobe and Microsoft suites.

Please note: Student Services (e.g., Advisement, Financial Aid, New Student Center, International Student Services, Dean of Students) has moved back to Building 3, first floor.

The Reading & Writing Center, housed at the Learning Spot, offers a variety of academic services, and it received the 2020 Exemplary Practice Award by the Association of Florida Colleges. The RWC serves currently enrolled MDC students. Tutors are available in person and online to help students with their reading, grammar, and writing skills; their transfer and scholarship application essays; and their assignments for any reading, writing, or speech class and any courses that are reading/writing intensive.

Our tutors can assist in answering questions students might have about assignments, course papers, and other reading and writing tasks and guide them through the writing process, better equipping them with the necessary skills to succeed in class and beyond.

Tutoring

Students can meet with a tutor in person in room 2301 (Wolfson Campus) or online on Zoom in hour-long sessions. Tutors can share feedback and clarify the next steps for a particular assignment or help students assess where they are in their reading and writing skills and recommend what they should do next. Students can receive assistance with numerous assignments, including course papers, lab reports, creative writing pieces, and scholarship and transfer application essays. Tutors review a variety of writing components, including thesis statements, organization, content development, research integration, grammar, and style.

In order to better assist students during appointments, students should email their tutor beforehand the following:

Assignment sheet/directions
Drafts or any source material
Instructor’s comments/feedback

Speech Studio

Speeches are an effective tool capable of changing beliefs, feelings, and actions. Practice your next speech with a tutor who will provide feedback on:

the speech's organization
the presenter's knowledge of the topic
the speech's audience adaptation
the use of presentation aids
the presenter's delivery skills
whether the speech adheres to its specific type or genre

Skill A la Carte

These 30-minute one-on-one workshops are for students who don't have an assignment they want to work on but nonetheless want to improve their reading and writing skills. Students can request a Skill a la Carte in reading, writing, punctuation, parts of speech, and/or sentence structure by calling us or by completing this form. KEYS Workshops

The Keep Educating Yourself Series (KEYS) workshops are scheduled throughout the semester via our center or at an instructor’s request for a class. Topics range from reading and writing skills to scholarship and transfer application essays, and subjects covered include English composition, literature, creative writing, and speech.
