[+CATALYST] SPRING 2023 - UNDERGRADUATE 2ND YEAR STUDIO - INSTRUCTOR: HAYRI DORTDIVANLIOGLU

STUDIO OVERVIEW

The focus of this studio is to explore the interplay between the existing site condition and envisioned architecture, emphasizing crafting experiences through the manipulation of materials, light, and movement. This approach aims to enhance students’ understanding and skills in architectural design within urban environments. The curriculum includes examining how physical movement shapes space and delving into the perceptual aspects of spatial experience, such as the transformative impact of light. For the final project, titled [+CATALYST], students introduced an architectural intervention designed to positively transform the social, economic, and cultural aspects of Sweet Auburn Street in Downtown Atlanta. Students adopted a holistic approach, balancing the unintended consequences, unpredictability, and contingency of external forces with a thorough process deeply rooted in intentional, forward-thinking design informed by their reading of the site’s narrative.
