Knocknagoney Primary School's Virtual Zoo Py Primary 7

Welcome to our Virtual Zoo inspired by Belfast Zoo

P7 have really enjoyed using Adobe Express throughout the year and were very excited to create their own websites as part of the C2K Newsdesk competition in partnership with Belfast zoo! P7 carried out their own research on endangered animals that inhabit Belfast zoo and then created their own website. They created infographics to make their information more visually appealing and used A.I to generate some of the images for their websites. Absolutely fantastic work P7, well done!

Zoos are important for several reasons

Conservation: They play a critical role in protecting endangered species through captive breeding and habitat funding.

Education: Zoos educate the public about wildlife and conservation, fostering a connection between people and animals.

Research: They advance scientific research that benefits both wildlife and ecosystems, allowing for the study of animal behavior and health.

Recreation: Zoos provide recreational opportunities while promoting conservation values, especially among youth.

Biodiversity: They help protect biodiversity, which is crucial for a sustainable future.

These factors highlight the multifaceted importance of zoos in society and their contributions to animal welfare and conservation efforts

Zoos are now seen as an essential places where many species which are under threat can be preserved and maintained.

Belfast Zoo

Belfast Zoo plays a vital role in conservation work by taking part in breeding programmes that aim to increase the population of endangered animals.

Belfast Zoo currently takes part in more than 60 breeding programmes. Each programme is run by a species coordinator from a zoo around the world and is supported by experts from other zoos. The breeding programmes for the François langur, the black and white Colobus monkey and red squirrels are coordinated by Belfast Zoo staff.

One of the best ways to see the impact of humans on the planet is by learning about endangered animals, how they’ve become endangered, and what steps are being taken to stop them from extinction.

What can we do to help?

Climate change will eventually alter where bamboo (giant pandas’ primary food source) and eucalyptus (koalas' primary food source) can grow, which could shrink habitats in the future. Here’s how you can help save energy—and protect these animals:

• Turn off the lights when you leave a room.

• Hang up your freshly washed clothes to dry.

• Walk or bike as much as you can instead of driving.
