Recreational Athletics Undergoes Refresh, Rebrands As UREC

The Drexel Recreation Center underwent a complete refresh of its entire suite of fitness and exercise equipment in tandem with a rebrand to the department's newly named Office of University Recreation (URec). The new name reflects the mindset of being there for the entire University population, including students, faculty, professional staff and the neighbors of the Drexel community.

Overall, the recreation center welcomed over 500,000 visitors in 2023-24, including servicing 13,072 distinct users (Alumni, Community, Employee, Student).

Club Programs Capture National Championship, Conference Title

Drexel’s club sports programs excelled on a national stage with Club Fencing capturing a national championship in Women's Sabre. In addition, seven clubs attended National Tournaments (Climbing, Cricket, Fencing, Paintball, Powerlifting, Ski & Snowboard, Swimming) and Club Ice Hockey won the 2024 ESCHL Conference Championship.

Intramural Sports, Group Exercise Offerings Grow

Responding to the needs of recreational student-athletes, URec expanded its intramural sport offerings with the addition of Futsal and Pickleball. In addition, three new group exercise programs were added, including BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT and Sprint8.

URec Once Again Hosts Employee Olympics

Campus Recreation once again hosted the annual Employee Olympics, a one-day event that targets benefits-eligible university employees and allows them to compete head-to-head with their colleagues in various activities. This year's Employee Olympics saw over 400 participants.

Drexel Therapy Dogs Continue To Provide Relief

Having access to specially trained animals can provide relief from feelings of depression, anxiety and loneliness. Drexel’s Therapy Dog program, which is housed in the Recreation Center, was featured in Independence Blue Cross’ “How I Know My Mind” series which educates the community and offers resources to support mental health.
