Vidas Play Day

Vidas Play Day serves our mission to excel in civic engagement with an emphasis on service to the local West Philly Promise Neighborhood. This is a joint effort by the Drexel Athletic Department and student-athletes. The day focused on hosting our neighboring elementary schools (Locke or Martha Washington) for a day filled with food, fun and exposure to different sports. The children were split into groups led by Drexel student-athletes who walked kids through different activities. The event is capped with the students receiving bags with school supplies and snacks.

MLK Community Clean Up Day

Drexel University athletics continued to give back to the West Philadelphia and Powelton Village communities by participating in a broad range of service initiatives, including this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Working side-by-side with members of the West Philly Promise Neighborhood, Lancaster Avenue Business Association, Police Department Advisory Committee and Spark Therapeutics more than 300 student-athletes helped to clean up Lancaster Ave between 34th and 51st Street.

Operation Swimsuit Collects Swimwear for Area Youth

Drexel Athletics partnered with West Philly Promise Neighborhood and the 16th District PDAC for a year long swimsuit drive as part of Operation Swimsuit. The aim was to provide local youth with appropriate swimwear to be able to use at city pools during the summer. Drexel Athletics has already collected more than 200 swimsuits across various events.

Drexel University, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and Fab Youth Philly Partner for Teen Lifeguard Training

To fill Philadelphia's need for lifeguards at city pools this past summer, a public-private partnership was created to train 13 local teens for the positions while providing employment and professional development opportunities. The collaboration lasted over 12 weeks of training for teens, aged 15 to 19, at the pool in the Drexel Recreation Center, courtesy of Drexel Athletics, with a certified trainer from Parks & Recreation.

Team Impact

Team IMPACT provides a safe, supportive and encouraging environment for a child and their family to connect with a college athletic team and local campus community. Various Dragon programs including men's soccer and wrestling partnered with Team Impact this past year.
