Record-Setting 24 Hours of Impact Benefits Drexel Student-Athletes

Drexel Athletics established a new record by raising over $500,000 dollars during 24 Hours of Impact, the University's annual Day of Giving, on May 10. Collectively the department accounted for nearly 60 percent of the total donations on the day with 3,500 gifts being made to support Dragon student-athletes.

Athletics had 13 programs finish within the top 16 of campus organizations in overall donations. Men's swimming and diving led all athletics teams and placed second overall with wrestling finishing third. Women's soccer, men's soccer, women's lacrosse and men's and women's rowing also placed in the top 10. Three teams – men's lacrosse, women's basketball and wrestling – surpassed $50,000 raised during the day with wrestling achieving the feat for the third consecutive year.

Cozen Family Extends Basketball Legacy at Drexel with Athletic Center Endowment

For seven decades the name Sam Cozen has been synonymous with the success of Drexel University Basketball, setting a standard for achievement during his record-setting 16 seasons as head coach (1952-1968) and memorialized since 2010 with the naming of the Sam Cozen Court in the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Thanks to an endowment established by Stephen Cozen and his family, the Cozen name will endure in perpetuity while providing resources that will help to ensure that the DAC remains one of the region’s premiere sporting venues and Drexel basketball is positioned for sustained success for years to come by providing annual resources for facility maintenance, branding, sports performance equipment and technology.

Burkholder Family Endows Drexel Women’s Basketball Head Coach Position

Drexel Athletics is pleased to announce the establishment of the Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder Family Women's Basketball Head Coach position – the third endowed coaching position at the University. The endowment was made possible thanks to the generosity of Janet Burkholder, who made the gift in honor of her late husband Barry '62, '70.

Longtime friends of the program, the Burkholders have hosted the women's basketball team at their home and remained connected to the student-athletes and coaches. The Dragons have reached the postseason 13 times since 2009 and won or shared the CAA regular season title in four of the last six seasons. The program earned bids to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, 2020 and 2021 and won the Women's National Invitation Tournament in 2013.

Drexel is the first program in the CAA and Philadelphia Big 5 to endow its women's basketball head coaching position.

Athletics Expands Mental Health Resources for Student-Athletes

Thanks to a partnership with the Drexel University Counseling Center and donor support, the Drexel Athletics Department will expand its mental health resources for student-athletes through the appointment of a full-time clinical psychologist. This clinician will provide leadership, oversight and clinical expertise that enhances student-athlete success on and off the field of competition, including goal-focused individual therapy, crisis intervention, group therapy and workshops, as well as outreach programming and consultation.
